Debra Messing Talks Divorce

Debra Messing has been pretty successful with her television-acting career, and she seemed to have a pretty successful marriage too. But the actress has filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years, Daniel Zelman. She says the divorce is amicable and that they are committed to raising their 9 year-old son together.

See our Knoxville TN divorce attorney.

Read more from People Magazine:

Debra Messing is opening up about her divorce in the June issue of More magazine.

“We both wanted it to last forever, and it’s a sad thing that it wasn’t able to go the course,” the Smash actress says of her 10-year marriage to writer Daniel Zelman.

“Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn’t able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me.”

After working on opposite coasts for three years, Messing, 44, says she and Zelman tried to make it work to no avail – but are now content on focusing on their 9-year-old son, Roman. Continue reading…

NBA Star Possibly Getting Divorce

Spurs fans are watching the playoffs with great anticipation and excitement. But the team’s success isn’t the only thing getting fans talking. There are rumors circulating that Tim Duncan may be getting a divorce from his wife Amy. Papers have been filed that only contain the initials of the couple, but they match those of Duncan and his wife.

Read more from MySanAntonio.com:

A divorce case filed here two months ago that bears only the initials of the husband and wife has all the hallmarks of being that of Spurs star Tim Duncan and his wife, Amy.

The case is playing out in Bexar County District Court. Court papers filed last week include a request that legal discovery in the case be postponed until after the Spurs’ last playoff game.

Efforts to confirm Thursday that the legal proceedings involve Tim Duncan, 37, and Amy, 35, were unsuccessful.

But there are a few other clues in the case that point to the couple: continue reading…

Movie Depicts Divorce From The Child’s Perspective

Maisie is a movie about a little girl who watches her parents go through a bitter divorce. The movie has received 4 stars from critics and is expanding nationwide this weekend. In the movie, the 6 year-old daughter becomes a pawn for the parents in their fights with each other.

Read more from USA Today:

Six-year-old Maisie has parents too busy viciously fighting with each other to realize what an amazing little girl they have.

And she’s too quietly watchful to seem bereft.

But we feel her aching sadness.

Young Onata Aprile gives a startlingly natural, understated and poignant performance as sweet-natured Maisie in the wonderfully captivating, splendidly acted What Maisie Knew (* * * * out of four; rated R; expanding Friday nationwide).

Maisie’s the casualty in her narcissistic parents’ lethal emotional warfare. Their fighting leads to divorce and a nasty custody battle. Too self-absorbed to handle the care of little Maisie, they mostly just want to inflict pain on each other. Continue reading…

Divorce Damaging To Kids’ Health

Divorce is painful and complicated, especially if children are involved. In fact, a child’s mental and physical health can be put in serious jeopardy as a result. Pediatricians see children go through anxiety, depression, and insomnia, to name a few.

Read more from The Huffington Post:

Divorce is hard, especially on kids.

And according to Dr. James Sears of “The Doctors” TV show, parental separation can also compromise kids’ mental and physical health.

“Some of the things I’ve seen are depression, anxiety, oftentimes changes in sleep habits, nightmares, insomnia, bed wetting, distress,” he said on Thursday. “The lack of sleep and poor nutrition is a perfect recipe for an immune system that isn’t going to work as well and kids get sick more frequently — about 20 to 30 percent more frequently kids will get sick if there’s divorce.”

So how can you make the transition easier for everyone in the family? Continue reading…

Kodak is getting closer to exiting bankruptcy. When it does emerge, however, it will be a much different company that people are used to. The photo company will be more current, focusing on digital printing and imaging service.

Learn more about bankruptcy laws.

Read more from The New York Times:

When Eastman Kodak emerges from bankruptcy this summer or fall, it will be a shadow of the blue-chip corporate giant it once was.

A celebrated company whose little yellow packages of film documented generations of birthday parties, weddings and anniversaries, the new Kodak will be more commercially focused, providing printing and imaging services to businesses as well as film to the movie industry.

Consumers will probably still be able to find Kodak-brand film in vacation spots around the world. They will still be able to buy digital cameras bearing the Kodak name. And they will still be able to download and print their digital pictures at kiosks in their local drugstores. Continue reading…

Electric Carmaker Goes Bankrupt

Coda has announced its plans to file for bankruptcy, which isn’t a surprise to those who knew much about the company. Coda specialized in electric cars, which haven’t taken off in the market. Coda also didn’t do a good job selling its cars, including a lack of advertising, too high of a price tag, and not enough bells and whistles.

Read more from cleantechnica.com:

Not long ago, I happened to get connected with a high-up at Coda. A few back-and-forths seemed to confirm what was pretty clear already — the carmaker was doomed. There are a lot of potential reasons for the failure — and, in actuality, it’s probably all of them combined.

For one, Coda didn’t seem to be on anyone’s radar. I almost never saw anyone hype the car. As Chris DeMorro of Gas2 notes, the Coda Coda (Coda Automotive is the name of the company and its only model) “offered adequete range in a very boring, Chinese-built package.” Some might like the design, but yes, it was designed to look like a common car, nothing more.

Furthermore, the car wasn’t cheap. At $37,250, it needed something more exciting (which it didn’t have) in order to compete with the Nissan Leaf and a range of other plug-in electric cars. Continue reading…

Videogame Developer Goes Bankrupt

TimeGate Studios Inc. is a video game company that has had to file for bankruptcy. As a result, it is putting itself on the auction block. This decision came after a judge ruled against them in a $9 million suit.

TimeGate Studios Inc., a video game developer behind “Section 8” and “Aliens: Colonial Marines,” has filed for bankruptcy and has put its business on the auction block after an appellate court reinstated a $9 million judgment against the company.

TimeGate’s lenders have agreed to serve as the stalking horse, or lead bidder, for an auction of the company’s assets in a deal valued at $2.6 million. The purchase price, which must include at least $150,000 in cash, is subject to higher bids at a bankruptcy auction. Read the bid rules here.

The videogame developer employs 33 people at its Sugar Land, Texas, headquarters, according to an affidavit filed by John Young, the company’s chief restructuring officer. It listed assets of less than $10 million and debt of less than $50 million its bankruptcy petition filed Wednesday for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston. Continue reading…

Fisker Automotive On The Verge Of Bankruptcy

Fisker Automotive only ever produced one electric car: the $103,000 Karma. And that car’s sales have not sold enough to make the business successful. The carmaker owes the government more than $190,000 million.

Read more from delewareonline.com:

As Fisker Automotive dawdles on the steps of bankruptcy court, Delaware and the federal government stand to lose a whole lot of money. Together, the two governments have more than $190 million on loan to the troubled automaker.

But few have a clear idea of just how much of that would be written off and lost in a bankruptcy filing by the California-based maker of plug-in hybrid gas-electric cars.

Some say very little of value remains in the Fisker coffers – or in the company in terms of noncash assets, such as patented technology, salable brands or an ongoing business that a buyer could pick up and resume. Continue reading….

Probiotic supplements are popular among humans, but new studies show they may also benefit horses. Horse owners are providing their animals with nutritional supplements containing probiotics. Recent studies show those probiotics may help horses’ defense mechanisms and their GI tracts.

Nutritional supplements containing probiotics are popular purchases for some horse owners, even if not all of these products’ label claims are backed by research. But some researchers are working to better understand these probiotics’ effects on horses. At the 2013 Western Veterinary Conference, held Feb. 17-21, in Las Vegas, Nev., one veterinarian presented research behind a certain type of probiotic supplement for horses.

Martin Furr, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, a professor and Adelaide C. Riggs Chair in Equine Medicine at Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, described a preliminary study evaluating the effects of using Pediococcus acidilactici and Saccharomyces boulardii-based probiotics in horses.

Probiotics are a subtype of immunomodulators, which are substances designed to enhance the body’s defense mechanisms. Manufacturers market these nutritional supplements to support and protect the gastrointestinal (GI) system in a variety of mammals, including horses. Furr said that while probiotics’ mechanism of action remains “poorly described,” existing research suggests they can (when consumed appropriately) have a number of beneficial effects on animals’ immune system and/or GI tract function, including: continue reading…

Digital Orthodontics Available For All

Stratasys produces 3D printers for orthodontic offices and has announced a new product: the Objet30 OrthoDesk 3D Printer. This printer will make digitalizing orthodontics for all orthodontists’ offices. Digital equipment up till now had been too expensive for smaller offices.

Stratasys, a manufacturer of 3D printers and production systems for prototyping and manufacturing, announced the launch of the Objet30 OrthoDesk 3D Printer, specially designed for smaller orthodontic labs and clinics.

According to a release, the Objet30 OrthoDesk now makes digital orthodontics accessible for facilities of all sizes.

Digital orthodontics is rapidly becoming the industry standard because of its many business advantages including the ability to significantly shorten delivery times, increase production capacity and eliminate bulky model storage. 3D printers have only been practical for larger labs.

“Objet30 OrthoDesk is great for smaller labs. It offers efficiency, quality and accuracy in a convenient desktop size which is just right for us,” said Ana L. Marin, Lab Owner, ARCAD Lab. “It’s enabling us to expand our services to a wider range of customers. I definitely see Objet30 OrthoDesk as a game-changer.” Continue reading…

UCSF Opens Nighttime Orthodontic Clinic

A new dental clinic will be open one night a month to assist lower income patients with orthodontic care. The clinic is run through the university’s dental program and will offer services at 10% of the normal price. Dental students benefit from the practice while those who otherwise would not be able to afford dental care are given the chance.

A new evening dental clinic at UCSF is offering orthodontic care to low-income patients at nearly one-tenth of the typical cost.

The UCSF Orthodontic Night Clinic, which was launched at the UCSF Dental School this month, will be held once a month. The first night was already busy, as orthodontic residents and dental students attended to the steady stream of new patients, most of whom were getting pre-treatment impressions and photographs

“I thought it was a really great learning experience,” said Abraham Tang, a third-year dental student and one of the volunteers. “Also, it gives students who are interested in orthodontics a chance to learn more about the field.” Continue reading…

“First-To-File” Patent System To Go Into Effect in March

Beginning March 16, the United States will begin using the “first-to-file” patent system in place of the current “first-to-invent” system. This means the first person to file a patent will be granted the rights even if they are not the first to come up with the invention. This is not new in the US but has been resurrected by the America Invents Act which was signed into law in 2011.

Read more from SBDC Business Forum:

In the world of business, intellectual property is one of the cornerstones for creating and preserving value in a company.

On March 16, the United States officially will embrace the “first-to-file” patent system, where the first person to file a patent is granted the rights.

Currently, the system is “first-to-invent,” meaning that the first person to come up with an invention is entitled to intellectual property protection. This fundamental change, along with a few other significant alterations, is the result of the America Invents Act, signed into law in 2011.

Most of the rest of the world follows a “first-to-file” patent system, and, historically, the United States did as well. In 1834, Walter Hunt invented the sewing machine, but decided not to patent it. In 1846, Elias Howe received a patent for the sewing machine because he was the first person to file an application. In 1853, Hunt tried to file an application on his 1834 invention, but his application was rejected.

By that time, Isaac Singer, famous for Singer sewing machines, improved the invention significantly, making it commercially viable. Howe sued Singer for patent infringement and won his case even though he was not an inventor. Continue reading…

75-year-old Indiana Farmer Fights Monsanto Over Patent Law

A case involving Vernon Hugh Bowman and Monsanto will be heard in the US Supreme Court this week. Bowman is a farmer who legally purchased Monsanto patented seeds and then saved the seeds from crops and replanted in subsequent seasons. Monsanto claims that Bowman infringed upon their patent by saving the seeds and replanting them. Bowman contends that “Monsanto’s sales of the original seeds to authorized purchasers exhausted Monsanto’s patent rights and therefore Monsanto cannot enforce its patents against second-generation and later seeds that resulted from planting the original seeds.”

Read more from The Epoch Times:

Vernon Hugh Bowman, the farmer, said that he legally purchased soybean seeds at a grain elevator, which purchased those seeds from farmers who were authorized by Monsanto to sell the company’s genetically modified seeds, according to law firm Frommer Lawrence & Haug LLP, which is representing him. Monsanto contends that it holds patents over those soybeans.

Five years ago, Monsanto, a company worth $12 billion, sued Bowman to prevent him from using and selling soybean seeds taken from plants that were grown from Monsanto seeds, according to the law firm. Those seeds are resistant to herbicides and allow farmers to kill weeds without harming their soybean crops, thus dominating the agriculture industry in the United States. Continue reading…

Apple’s New CEO Opposed Samsung Lawsuit

Tim Cook, successor to Steve Jobs as the CEO of Apple, was not in favor of suing Samsung for patent infringement due to the major role Samsung played in supplying components for the iPhone and iPad. The companies developed a very close relationship in 2005 which ultimately led to each company gaining insights into the other’s operations. Samsung then used these insight to develop devices that infringed upon Apple’s patents.

Read more from Cnet:

As Apple’s patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung drag on, it appears that not everyone in Apple brass was in favor of suing the South Korean electronics giant.

Tim Cook, who succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as chief executive after seven years as chief operating officer, was opposed to suing Samsung, mostly because of the company’s role as a key supplier of components for the iPhone and iPad, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The Cupertino-based company was Samsung’s biggest customer in 2011, reportedly buying some $8 billion worth of screens and chips.

After signing a flash memory deal in 2005, the two companies developed a close relationship that included the grandson of Samsung’s founder visiting Jobs’ Palo Alto, Calif., home, Reuters reported. That partnership reportedly gave each company insight into each others operations. Continue reading…

Obama Says Patent Reform Should Address More

President Barack Obama said US patent reform needs to go farther to address the trend of “non-practicing entities” suing other companies for patent infringement. After a year, Congress was able to pass patent reform in 2011 but it did not address the issue of “patent trolls.” Obama stated that “Our efforts at patent reform only went halfway to the point where they need to go,” and is calling for “smarter patent laws.”

Read more from Reuters:

High-tech companies in particular have complained to regulators about big patent licensing companies that manufacture nothing but sue long lists of firms, often using weak patents to do so. Many high-tech firms settle to avoid litigation risk but some, like Google, fight back.

The polite term for these firms is “non-practicing entities” but in private they are more rudely called “patent trolls.”

After a years-long fight, Congress passed a patent reform in 2011 which did little to address the issue.

Committee Meeting About ID’s for Immigrants

The Los Angeles City Council will be discussing the proposal for photo ID’s for undocumented immigrants. The proposal is supported by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Proponents of the proposal say that since immigrants would be able to apply for bank accounts, crime should decrease because they won’t have to carry cash. Critics of the proposal claim that offering ID’s is creating more incentive for people that come into the country illegally.

Here is more from the Los Angeles Times:

“The feeling was there are other ways for people who don’t have documents to open bank accounts, and this is really a federal policy, not a city policy,” said Gold, a psychiatrist. “The city should really focus on things important to the city, like balancing the budget, fixing the streets and the transportation-tax proposal.”

Card applicants would have to meet “strict” criteria, the mayor’s office said. The card, which officials say would look like a student ID, would include a photo, street address, date of birth, hair and eye color, height and weight. Law enforcement agencies could choose whether to recognize the card, and it would not substitute for a driver’s license, the mayor’s office said. The card would not be accepted as identification required for air travel.

The city program would be run by a vendor who would charge applicants between $10 and $20 to obtain a card, and a few dollars a month for the debit service, which would be optional, officials said. The details of how residents would obtain the cards haven’t been spelled out. Thousands of poor and elderly legal residents who don’t have a driver’s license or other identification would benefit from the program, the mayor’s office said. Continue reading…

Deferred Action Program: Slow Start

The deferred action program put into place by the Obama administration has had fewer applications than expected. There have been approximately 180,000 applications and 4591 approved applications out of the 1.3 million people that would qualify for the program. Applicants that are approved may also receive work visas and in some states they could file for a drivers license. Why are immigrants hesitating? Some think they are waiting to see what happens with the election or the outcome of the first applicants before applying.

Here is more from an affiliate of The Ledger:

”They do have a lot of concerns. Keep in mind, they are in the country undocumented,” said Tampa immigration lawyer Christian Zeller. ”Deferred action is just that. It’s not an immigration status.”

Mitt Romney’s recent announcement that he would shut down deferred action if elected president could trigger a change in the number of young immigrants applying for the program, local immigration officials said.

The Republican presidential nominee says he won’t revoke deferred action waivers or work permits approved under President Barack Obama, but would eliminate the rest of the program and replace it with ” permanent reform of our broken immigration system,” a Romney spokesman said. Continue reading…

City Council Set to Consider Proposal of Photo ID’s for Immigrants

In Los Angeles, a proposal to allow undocumented immigrants with a photo ID will soon be discussed by the City Council. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa supports the proposal because it will help immigrants open bank accounts among other things. Critics contend that coming to U.S illegally should not rewarded or aided and fear that providing ID’s will be an incentive for more immigrants to come into the country illegally.

Immigration a Big Topic in Debate

One of the hot topics during the debate between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama was immigration reform. Mitt Romney pointed out that President Obama had promised immigration reform during his previous campaign and failed to deliver. President Obama pointed out that he is for immigration reform helping illegal immigrants become citizens while Mitt Romney is taking a tougher stance.

“George Bush embraced comprehensive immigration reform. He didn’t call for self-deportation,” the president said.

Romney meanwhile sought to soften the blow of his “self-deportation” policy (albeit with an unfortunate use of the *i-word*) without walking away from it.

“Self-deportation says let people make their own choice. What I was saying is, we’re not going to round up 12 million people, undocumented illegals, and take them out of the nation. Instead let people make their own choice,” he said. I’m not in favor of rounding up people and taking them out of this country.” Continue reading…

In this season some aspects like average salary and occupations are vital for every member of the Congress should study, specially be aware about the severe consequences of the payroll tax cut policies.

HUFFINGTONPOST- Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Congress has an important tax policy decision to make. With the economy still struggling and one in eleven Americans out of work, January 1 would be an awful time to cut every paycheck in America. But, every paycheck in America will shrink unless Congress acts to extend, and preferably expand, the payroll tax holiday by the end of the year.

Up and down Wall Street, economists are warning about the severe consequences of inaction on payroll taxes and extended unemployment benefits. Goldman Sachs estimates that expiration of the payroll tax cut would reduce growth by as much as two-thirds of a percentage point in early 2012. Moody’s Mark Zandi adds that if Congress does not extend the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits for 2012, “there will be approximately one million fewer jobs by year’s end.”

Failure to extend the payroll tax cut would hurt workers in nearly every job and income category. For example, the nation’s 1.4 million truck drivers, whose salaries average $39,450, would pay $789 more in payroll taxes, on average. The nation’s 2.7 million nurses, whose salaries average $67,720, would lose $1,354, on average…continue reading

WASHINGTON- President Obama was in a holiday mood on Tuesday, urging members of Congress not to “be a Grinch” by refusing to continue tax cuts that mean $1,000 a year for the average family.

The payroll tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year, but Democrats plan to bring the president’s proposal for another vote next week.

“In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are going to give them another chance,” Obama told a crowd in Manchester, N.H.

Lawmakers are heading home this week for the Thanksgiving break but Obama hit the campaign trail Tuesday, portraying the GOP refusal to extend the payroll tax cuts as the same as actively voting to raise taxes.

“Next week they are going to get to take a simple vote,’ Obama said. “If they vote ‘no’ again, the typical family’s taxes will go up $1,000 next year.”…continue reading.

Romer’s claim about the effectiveness of fiscal policy is based on a study she did with her husband David Romer prior to her appointment as chair of Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors. They attempted to divide tax cuts implemented to ward off economic slumps from other types of tax cuts.

What they found when the ran the numbers is that tax cuts intended as anti-recessionary stimulus work. (Hat tip: The Money Illusion.)

This should be welcome by those of us who favor cutting taxes. But it is also being welcomed by the kind of people who think in terms of “aggregate demand” — which is to say, Keynesians of various stripes. For Keynesians, it is usually self-evident that if tax cuts work as stimulus, government spending will work even better.

The standard Keynesian logic on this is pretty simple. Some percentage of a tax cut will be saved by those who receive it. But all of government spending is actually spent, which means that it should have a greater stimulative effect.

Some Keynesians will even go so far as to say that even employing people to dig ditches and fill them back up will stimulate the economy. After all, that money is really being spent, put into the bank accounts of people who are actually made wealthier by the spending.

One problem with this point of view, however, is that the broader economy is not made any wealthier. If you dig ditches that don’t really need digging, you’ve provided cash to the jobless but not created any real assets of value. There’s nothing that can be bought or sold later. Or, even more important, nothing whose purchase can be foregone in the future because it was purchased now with government money…continue reading.

WASHINGTON – The failure of Congress’ “supercommittee” to propose even one dollar in deficit reduction has left Capitol Hill without a strategy for tackling the nation’s spiraling debt — and left several trillion-dollar spending and tax issues that must be resolved as soon as next month.

The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction announced Monday it could not come up with the minimum $1.2 trillion of deficit reduction required under its mandate, much less the $4 trillion that deficit hawks said was necessary to help stabilize the finances of the U.S. government, whose debt has topped $15 trillion.

The collapse of the 12-member bipartisan panel’s negotiations rattled the financial markets and set the stage for mandatory cuts to defense and domestic programs that would begin in 2013 — after next year’s presidential and congressional elections.

It ensures that the fiscal debate that has paralyzed Washington — between Democrats who want to protect expensive social programs and increase revenue by raising taxes on the richest Americans; and Republicans who want to trim government and have steadfastly rejected tax increases — will be a fundamental choice confronting voters in 2012.

For now, the panel’s inability to reach a deal leaves Congress with a range of unfinished budget items that could have been part of a larger bargain over federal taxes and spending.….continue reading.
